Walking in Flynn’s Footsteps
On July 17, 2025, a handful of members from The William Flynn Society gathered at Lancaster Country Club for a round that was equal parts golf and history lesson. For those who don’t know, Lancaster holds a special place in the story of William Flynn — it’s the course he spent the most time tweaking, adjusting, and improving throughout his career.
A big reason for Flynn’s revisions? The Conestoga River has a knack for reclaiming its real estate. Several original holes were prone to flooding, so Flynn reimagined parts of the layout, adding what are now holes 3 through 5. But Mother Nature wasn’t the only driving force behind the changes — Flynn also kept an eye on the way golf technology was evolving. As balls flew farther and clubs got stronger, he adjusted bunkers, angles, and green complexes to keep the course challenging but fair.
Despite the sweltering heat and stifling humidity, we all had a great time. Some members were seeing Flynn’s Lancaster work for the first time, which made it even more special. There’s nothing quite like standing on a tee box, knowing you’re hitting from the same strategic mind that gave us gems like Shinnecock Hills and Cherry Hills.
As we wrapped up, the day reminded us why we’re so drawn to Flynn’s work: thoughtful design, timeless strategy, and the subtle thrill of discovering little design nuances that stand the test of time.
We hope you can join us for the next event at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in September.
