William Flynn Society event at the Washington Golf and Country Club in 2025

This past week, twelve members of the William Flynn Society gathered at the Washington Golf and Country Club for lunch and a round of golf.

Society members Rich Sobonya, Taylor Chamberlin, and Jason Dunham kindly hosted the small but eager gathering.

Washington Golf and Country Club, originally on leased land in the Rosslyn/Fort Myer Heights, was organized in 1892 and formally incorporated in 1894.  It became the ninth club to join the United States Golf Association.  The Club moved to its current location in 1909 with nine holes designed by Rear Admiral Rixey, who owned the land.  In 1910, Donald Ross was hired to redesign the course.  William Flynn was engaged to redesign the golf course in 1919.  Tom Doak and his team reworked the bunkers and revised a few holes, particularly the 15th, in the manner of Flynn.
